Education About the Basics of Free Societies

Summary

YOUR report (February 20) that 40-per cent of Muslims favour the introduction of Sharia law in certain parts of Britain is disturbing. It seems that a significant number of Muslims simply do not understand the nature of non-Muslim societies. There is a clear need for more dialogue between British Muslims and non-Muslims. Another Scottish newspaper recently initiated a meeting between a leading Muslim and prominent representatives of other belief systems. All the parties emphasised the need for dialogue and it was pointed out that Scotland has so far escaped the worst excesses of the Muslim backlash. But meetings between the great and the good, though important, will never bridge the gap of understanding that clearly exists.

There should be local initiatives all over Scotland where non- Muslims can show that they care about Muslim sensibilities and moderate Muslims can be helped to educate some of their co- religionists about the fundamentals of open, democratic societies.
