GLENRATH Farms, Scotland's biggest independent egg producer, enjoyed another cracking year because of the popularity of the Atkins diet and a global egg shortage caused by avian influenza and a heat wave in Europe which killed millions of chickens.

Turnover at the Peebles-based company, which churns out more than one million eggs a day, surged to (pounds) 22.7m, compared with (pounds) 18.8m last time.
