"ALL this happiness is too much, " says Irene Macdougall's Madame Ranevskaya in Uzbekistan-born director Vladimir Bouchler's production of Chekhov's most serious comedy. In Stuart Paterson's new adaptation, you're not sure whether to laugh or cry. By this time in the playroom of Ranevskaya's big old mansion where the rooms of a doll's house are lit with the warm glow of long ago, we've already seen a parade of friends, family and neighbours in assorted states of lovelorn confusion become increasingly absurd as they try to make sense of a changing world.
