End the Coalition

Summary

WHILE no friend of Labour, I cannot help empathising with senior figures within the party calling for an end to the coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The LibDems want to have their cake and eat it by taking all the credit for popular Scottish Executive policies, while disowning the many, many failures as being solely the responsibility of their senior partners.

By continuing sharing power with them, Labour sanctions the fact that it is being made to look foolish. If it can lose Dunfermiline West to the LibDems, it can lose anywhere, especially if it chooses not to respond decisively in axeing its junior partners from government in Scotland. The first minister has been too lenient on his coalition partners - and probably for the well-intentioned reason of maintaining some stability in government - but enough is surely enough and he should start to take account of the bruised feelings of his people on the ground.
