SCOTTISH & Southern Energy has teamed up with Shell UK and Petrofac subsidiary CO2DeepStore to apply for funding for a long- awaited carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility in Peterhead.

ScottishPower, owned by Spain's Iberdrola, and Peel Group's Ayrshire Power also confirmed yesterday they have applied for the same European Union money for CCS projects at Longannet in Fife and Hunterston, North Ayrshire respectively. The EU is expected to use EUR 4.5 billion (pound(s)3.8bn) to support up to eight CCS and 34 renewable energy projects across Europe. A decision is expected in late 2012.
