ENGLAND'S athletics medal hopes for the Commonwealth Games are haemorrhaging, writes Doug Gillon. Michael East, the defending 1500 metres champion, has withdrew from the Melbourne team because of a recurrent Achilles-tendon problem, and he will now focus on preparations for the European Championships next summer.

England have already lost Kelly Holmes, the defending women's 1500m champion, due to the double Olympic gold medallist's injury enforced retirement, three of the country's No.1 jumpers and their leading female sprinter.
