Theatre Theatre critics are regarded as a queer bunch. Few did more to define the public image of that particular profession than Kenneth Tynan. A voracious fantasist all bunged up with neuroses, he breathed deep on the artifice of the world he documented, as if physical proximity alone would cause some of its stardust to rub intimately upon him. The fact that Janet Munsil's play puts his final days at its centre would suggest that it did.

Then again, its other pivot is Louise Brooks, the ultimate silent- screen goddess, who he sought out in her New York boudoir at the end of the 1970s, some 50 years after he'd been captivated by the jet- black bobbed temptress's sexual allure in Pandora's Box.
