CHRISTOPHER Frew has replied very elegantly to Chris Parton on the subject of spelling (Letters, June 29). He could have expanded his reply and tiptoed into the punctuation minefield.
Commas, apostrophes and the like are regarded as oppressive squiggles by the people who have an aversion to standard orthography and conventional written expression. These marks, however, are little guides to lead us through sentences and paragraphs: they replace the pauses and emphases of the spoken language and, if used properly, should make meaning clear.See the full content of this document
