THE results of a groundbreaking experiment allowing pupils to sit their Standard Grades a year early were given a cautious welcome yesterday despite the fact those taking part did not perform as well as their older counterparts in this year's exams.

Nearly 70percent of the candidates who sat their exams in third rather than fourth year as part of the Scottish Executivefunded pilot at a secondary school in Moray passed five Standard Grades at general level or above.
