UPto 2000 people are feared dead after the powerful earthquake which struck a remote Indonesian island and caused panic across south-east Asia.

The quake, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, devastated the island of Nias on Monday night, reducing large parts of Gunungsitoli, its main town, to rubble.
