SCOTLAND was told to brace itself for "explosive" weather today as forecasters predicted violent storms would sweep across much of the country and the north of England.

An emergency alert to exceptionally severe storms was issued last night by the Met Office, which warned of gusts up to 90mph across southern Scotland.
