THE SNP Government has just had its worst day since coming to power. John Swinney's expression of regret when he stood up to explain why he had made such a mess of Scotland's ability to vary taxes was so anaemic it didn't deserve sympathy.

This normally sure-footed politician has dealt with this problem so badly that his career as Finance Secretary has been seriously undermined - and it was a problem of his own making.
