IT IS one of the most ambitious art prizes on the planet. Three hundred and fifty nominations from 60 countries whittled down to an exhibition of eight artists and a single winner of a [GBP]40,000 prize with no conditions on the age, status or nationality of the artists. The selectors come from India and Latin America, the judges from Italy, Cuba, the US and the UK, the artists from as far apart as Finland, Rio and Taiwan.

This is the Artes Mundi Prize. You'd be forgiven for thinking it takes place in NewYork, Sao Paolo or Beijing. In fact, I'm in Cardiff, in the National Museum, where Tessa Jackson, former Scottish Arts Council director and current chairman of Edinburgh Art Festival, is putting the finishing touches to the exhibition.
