Factory Prices Show Sharpest Monthly Rise Since 1996

Summary


PRICES charged by UK manufacturers rose at the sharpest monthly pace recorded in nine years during August, pushing the annual rate of core factory gate inflation to its highest rate since June 1996.

The "narrow" measure of output prices - which excludes volatile areas such as food, drink, tobacco and petroleum - rose by 0.5% between July and August, five times the rate predicted by analysts. This took the annual rate of inflation to 2.1%, up from 1.7% in July.
