Summary
THE numerous children among the 1500 dead and wounded in Falluja last week caused scarcely a ripple in the British media. While the carnage continues there, Saturday's banner headline in the newspaper with the largest circulation in the UK reads "Becks, sex and me". Meanwhile, this Easter, Mr Blair holidays with the family in Bermuda and Mr Bush relaxes at the ranch in Texas. If this is a true reflection of the values of our society then we have cause for despair.
But at 1pm on Friday my wife and I attended the cinema to see a film called The Fog of War that consists of little more than an 85- year-old Robert McNamara, the former US defence secretary, talking to the camera. In the event, we found this to be a remarkable film that has uncanny relevance to events in the Middle East, not only those of the past year but also of the past few days. At that time of day, we expected to be sitting in splendid isolation in the cinema and were more than a little surprised to find the place packed.
