It was to be the making of him . . . and of Japanese fashion. Soon the West was swooning to the designs of Issey Miyake, the post-nuclear chicZ of Rei Kawabuko and her Comme des Garcons label, and Yohji Yamamoto s Hiroshima chicZ (fashion journalism is obviously full of original minds).
