Fare's fair? Apparently not. In 2008 train operators promised passengers a simplified fares structure. All rail tickets would be categorised as Advance, Anytime or Off-Peak. Yet anomalies continue to derail passengers two years down the line.

As The Herald reports today, there continue to be glaring inconsistencies between the prices charged for similar journeys, even when travelling on the same type of ticket, and little apparent correlation between distance travelled and the fares commanded. In another case passengers paid only 10p less than those travelling 30 miles further. When some passengers find they are paying far more than their travelling companions for identical journeys and cannot understand how fares are calculated, it fuels not just resentment but the suspicion that operators are simply charging on unregulated services what they think they can get away with.
