SCOTS farmers were yesterday praised for saving the lives of millions of farmland birds - including the declining corn bunting and yellowhammer - during the big freeze.

RSPB Scotland said farmland birds had been thrown a lifeline thanks to farmers across the country giving land over to wild birds and covering it in seed such as oats and barley.
