THE lambing season is about to start in earnest and while ewes are generally in good condition and a large crop of lambs is anticipated, the prospects for the sector are far from encouraging.
The market for hoggets - last year's lambs - is very depressed. The deadweight trade at 250p per kilo is almost 50p lower than at this time last year. This means that many of the store lambs purchased last autumn will leave little or no profit.
