IT is a damning indictment of Scottish athletics that 25 years after Allan Wells won Olympic gold, the coach who twice steered him on to the podium in Moscow and to a catalogue of sprint honours unsurpassed by any of his countrymen, has never been asked to speak on coaching in Scotland.

That the coach was his wife, Margot, is neither here nor there. Scotland has one living Olympic athletics' champion, and one living Olympic champion's coach. She must have done something right.
