Walter Smith insisted yesterday that he had no fear in accepting the poisoned chalice known as the Scotland manager's job, and also argued that Scotland were not yet out of the running for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Smith, a virtual certainty to land the job, controversially edged out Gordon Strachan, the fans' favourite who had also been interviewed by the SFA, and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract as Berti Vogts' successor.
