A DRUG to lower cholesterol which went on sale over the counter earlier this year could have potentially lethal effects on people who drink grapefruit juice, an official medicines watchdog warned yesterday.

It said the effects of simvastatin, which is marketed under the trade name Zocor, could be enhanced by a chemical found in grapefruit, leading to muscle wastage and possible kidney disease. The same chemical has previously led to warnings about grapefruit increasing the potency of other drugs such as tranquillisers and Viagra.
