Robert Wakeham gives a succinct and accurate account of the problems bedevilling Islay's piers, but that is not the end of the ferry service saga (Letters, October 22).

The MV Hebridean Isles is our designated ferry but, since 2003, it has been recognised that one ferry could not deal with the increasing traffic. Since then, the MV Isle of Arran, CalMac's spare boat, has doubled as our second ferry. Initially, the two-ferry service was summer only but by 2008 it was required year round. The timetable was and is based on the two-ferry operation, and you have to read the small print to find that it might "be subject to alteration at short notice".
