WHATEVER your take on the current William Wallace anniversary, it is probably true to say that cultural identity has been a national obsession in Scotland since the Act of Union in 1707. Since devolution, however, the inherent insecurity that can manifest itself in rampant parochialism, a massive chip on the collective shoulder and a habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory has at least ensured a more pluralistic approach to immigrants.

The well-meant notion of "new Scots" in a culturally diverse society has introduced the notion of inclusiveness into the melting pot of communities that now exist within our borders.
