I SUPPORT D R Mayer's challenge to the Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy (Letters, November 21) to produce chapter and verse for his claim that Scottish tax-raising powers would add GBP500m to [Scottish] business costs ("Scottish tax control 'could add GBP500m to business costs' ", The Herald, November 18). Mr Murphy has not explained how such enormous extra costs would arise, so let me explore the possible sources of the increased costs.

It cannot be the amount of corporation tax or VAT payable by Scottish business as these rates are set by the UK Treasury and are based on taxable profits and net sales liable for VAT respectively, and would not be dealt with under in Scottish taxraising powers. And it cannot be income tax because that is paid by individuals, not companies.
