Summary

Amnesty International is to hold a film festival next month as part of Violence against Women, a 16-day campaign which runs from November 25. Among the films to be shown at Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse will be Oscar-winning Monster and Lee Tamahori's Once Were Warriors, which depicts the dilemmas faced by a woman deciding whether to stay with the violent husband she loves.

The human rights group hopes the festival will spark discussion and encourage people to recognise domestic abuse as a human rights issue, not only a women's issue. A new Scottish poll published by Amnesty last week suggested that many underestimated how many women suffered domestic abuse. Just over half of those surveyed thought that fewer than one in 10 women suffered domestic violence at some point. The real figure is believed to be about one in 5.4. Although 71% of people see domestic violence as a serious issue in Scotland, only 16% believe it is a serious issue among people they actually know. The group now plans to launch a high-profile awareness- raising poster campaign.
