THE government acted yesterday to rid itself of the rump of "golden shares" with which it was left as a result of the privatisation stampedes of the eighties and nineties.

It will redeem the special share it holds in five energy companies - National Grid Transco, Viridian Group, Phoenix Natural Gas, ScottishPower, and Scottish & Southern Energy. It will, however, retain its share in British Energy, albeit with modified powers.
