TONY Blair came under heavy fire from all political sides yesterday for his support for Israel's disengagement plan, but the prime minister was adamant it represented a first step to a just settlement in the Middle East.

Reporting back to MPs about his talks last week with George W Bush and Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary-general, Mr Blair also emphasised the central role the UN would play in the political transition to a caretaker government in Iraq on June 30.
