WHEN Charles Hammond took his first job as corporate law assistant with McGrigor Donald in Glasgow, he probably did not see himself managing the port of Tilbury in Essex, taking over the old naval base at St Petersburg, and leading the creation of Edinburgh's 21stcentury waterfront new town.

Still only 44, the father of four who took over as chief executive of Forth Ports five years ago this week is now at the helm of one of the market's current hottest properties: the share price, which had already doubled in five years, has in three months jumped by another 20per cent, triggered by the bidding war for P&O, the sale of Teesside-based PD Ports, and the recognition that Forth is now a long-term property play.
