THE Scotmid co-operative has beaten four English super-market giants to buy the Morning Noon & Night chain of 50 convenience stores in a (pounds) 30m deal which has netted around (pounds) 20m for its founder and football club owner Eddie Thompson.

Thompson, who has delivered unbroken growth since founding MN&N 13 years ago, and is best known for his three-year tussle to win control of Dundee United, said he chose Scotmid because they "agreed to give an undertaking that they would not let any staff go, including in administration at head office".
