FRANK DELANEY was fuelling his car last week when a man at an adjacent pump struck up a conversation. The 63-year-old assumed the exchange to be little more than idle chatter as they waited for their respective tanks to fill but, as he replaced the nozzle, a startling question piqued his interest. "You've no idea who I am, do you Frank?' asked the man, smiling at the confusion caused.

An awkward few moments passed before it emerged that the man had been schooled at Springhill Amateur Boxing Club, the Shotts institution overseen by Delaney for the past 35 years. "Even now, I can never believe these guys remember me after all that time," he says, shaking his head. "To think that you've had an impact on their lives makes you realise that it is all worthwhile, after all."
