25 YEARS AGO BRITAIN'S 250,000 miners are shaping up to present a major challenge to the government on pay, pit closures and proposed labour law reforms.

The final agenda for next month's annual National Union of Mineworkers' conference at Eastbourne contains several key motions, which, if adopted, could bring confrontation between the miners and the government this winter. The most obvious potential challenge comes in the form of demands from Scottish miners, among others, for a minimum wage for the industry of pounds-100 a week.
