25 YEARS AGO

BRITAIN'S first Euro-poll was turning into a national flop last night. The "Don't Cares" were the ones who made the biggest impact on the election. With polls in parts of constituencies as low as 18%, politicians must now begin the post-mortem on the first direct elections to the European Parliament. Apathetic voters made their choice - by staying away from the polling booths in their millions. The turnout was far lower than even for local district elections.
