25 YEARS AGO

LABOUR'S National Executive Committee decided yesterday by 14 votes to 10 to ask the leader, Mr James Callaghan, not to create any more life peers. The motion, by Mr Tony Benn, a one-time hereditary peer, also asked any Labour Party members offered peerages to refuse. The decision followed a rowdy confrontation between Mr Callaghan and Mr Benn, at the end of which Mr Callaghan said he would be having talks with Labour peers about the decision.
