25YEARS AGO ALL Scottish League football grounds and rugby internationals at Murrayfield will have to go "dry" from early next year, if government plans go through.

This was announced to the Scottish Standing Committee by Mr Malcolm Rifkind, home affairs minister, when they discussed the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Bill. He rejected the idea that grounds could sell light beer in paper cups that could not used as dangerous missiles. The aim had to be to break the link between alcohol and football, he said. If present violence could be curbed it might be possible to return to "civilised" drinking at football grounds, but that was a long-term objective.
