25 YEARS AGO

TWO Highland councillors are demanding an official inquiry into how a giant American tanker sailed the "wrong way" through one of the busiest shipping channels round the Scottish coast. They are asking that the 83,437-ton New York-registered tanker Ultrasea be banned from entering a UK port until a satisfactory explanation is received. Regional Councillor Bill Mowat and District Councillor John Green, both representing the John O'Groats area, have given the Department of Trade list of 10 witnesses who saw the tanker go through the narrow Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth. Councillor Green said: "A massive pollution incident would have played havoc with the local economy."
