25YEARS AGO THE Royal Colleges of Medicine demanded legislation to restrict tobacco advertising and cut the death toll from smoking. They told the social services secretary, Mr Patrick Jenkin, in a letter that attempts to secure a newvoluntary agreement with the tobacco industry to curb advertising seemed to have failed. There has also been a marked increase in the money spent on advertising, and continuing expansion of promotional activities, particularly in arts sponsorship.

50 YEARS AGO FOR the first time since the inception of the American interchange scheme for British teachers, it seems Scotland will not take up its authorised quota of 10 in the session 1956-57.
