25 YEARS AGO THE left-wing Militant Tendency angrily rebutted claims by retiring Rutherglen MP Mr Gregor MacKenzie that it had crawled into the Labour Party with "exceptional dishonesty". West of Scotland Militant representative Mr Bob Wylie said supporters had never attempted to hide their backing for radical socialism. "Marxism has always been an important thread in the Labour Party. If Keir Hardie were alive today, Mr MacKenzie would probably denounce him as an infiltrator, " said Mr Wylie.

50 YEARS AGO THE British government, any British government, wants to go faster than its allies towards a summit meeting. This is the impression left by Mr Harold Macmillan's two remarks on summitry - first in Glasgow, where he said that the way ahead was clear, and at a press conference, when he suggested that everything except the time and date had been fixed.
