25 YEARS AGO TAM Dalyell, Labour MP for Linlithgow, was given a hero's welcome when he spoke in the debate on the Falklands. He accused Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her ministers of having told "identifiable lies" about the Belgrano affair. "They should be called to account, " he said. He also urged Roy Hattersley to support an inquiry under the 1921 Act, an assurance he duly received. Mr Hattersley did not respond to his call for a pledge that when Labour took office it would publish the papers, known as the "Crown Jewels".

50 YEARS AGO REGULATIONS for the safety of nuclear-propelled ships are being drafted on behalf of the Ministry of Transport for possible consideration by an international conference on the safety of life at sea next year, it was stated by John Brown, managing director of John Brown & Co (Clydebank) Ltd, in his presidential address to the Institute of Engineering and Shipbuilders in Scotland.
