REID Furniture, Scotland's biggest independent furniture retailer, has aborted an aggressive expansion programme aimed at enabling it to compete with arch-rival DFS south of the border.

Shops in England have been closed and costs slashed following a management restructuring that saw Peter Sheffield, founder chairman Sam Reid's erstwhile deputy and former chief executive, leave the business abruptly.
