COUNCILS are to receive an extra (pounds) 6m to educate children in care, after figures showed that most emerge with few qualifications.

A report said 60% of 16 and 17-year-olds who left care in the past year did not achieve any qualifications at or above the equivalent of Standard grade foundation level, compared with fewer than 10% for Scotland as a whole, while 60% of young people leaving care were not in education, training or employment. The equivalent figure for all of Scotland's 16-19 year olds is 14%.
