TONY Blair yesterday mounted an impassioned defence of his plan to introduce Las Vegas-style "mega casinos" across Britain and denied they would lead to an increase in addiction to gambling and organised crime.

Faced with increasing opposition from Tory and Labour MPs, church leaders and national newspapers, the prime minister insisted the Gambling Bill sought to modernise the industry, providing better regulation, enhanced protection for children and regeneration in rundown areas.
