ANEW front is about to open in the battle against terrorism. Next month, a hand-held device that looks a bit like a vacuum cleaner will undergo a trial on the London Underground. The idea is that it takes air samples from around people's bodies, revealing whether there is any trace of explosive materials. The device is one of the first attempts by Britain's new anti-terror force to develop technology that can detect terrorists before they strike.
The team of experts that make up this force are operating from a laboratory at the Ministry of Defence's research centre at Porton Down in Wiltshire. Initially, the CounterTerrorism Science and Technology Centre is being run by 15 key staff, who are drawing on the latest research and experimentation to pursue theirwork.
