THE first of the Scottish soft fruit harvest is now appearing in shops throughout the country. The number of farmers involved in the sector has dropped significantly in recent years, but those who remain are heavily committed to growing a high value product.
The sector is heavily dependent on seasonal immigrant labour, mostly from Eastern Europe with an estimated 5000 working on Scottish farms.
