Summary
IN your commercial property section, Martin Gudaitis of Montague Evans suggests that aggressive begging is driving people away from city-centre shops. The problems are far worse and cannot simply be blamed on a few vagrants. Glasgow city centre has now become an unsightly, unpleasant obstacle course of cafe tables, blocking large areas of the already small pavement and leaving little room for pedestrians in a sad attempt to convince someone that Glasgow is the new Paris/Barcelona/Milan.
Add to this the advertising "A" boards littering the remaining space, the continual digging-up of sections of the city like the once-beautiful Buchanan Street and the unwelcome proliferation of the "have you got a minute for . . . ?" merchants with their clipboards and fake friendliness, a lot more intrusive and aggressive than any beggar, and is it really any wonder that customers and retailers are heading for the out-of-town shopping malls?See the full content of this document
