Summary


The Ryder Cup is rated the third biggest sporting spectacle after the Olympic Games and football's World Cup, and, in common with the lower key Solheim Cup for women, I can't think of any other sporting occasion in which Europeans unite under the one cause.

For non-golf fans more used to the idea of rooting, for example, for Scotland, the notion of supporting Europe might be a difficult one to grasp, but it has been that way now for just over three decades in this absorbing form of head-to-head golf. For those from this side of the Atlantic who have been there and tasted the atmosphere, it is difficult to remain neutral when hearing stars and stripes-emblazoned supporters chanting "U-S-A, U-S-A."
