AFTER the Union of the Crowns James VI issued a shilling with the rose of England on the obverse and "Rosa sine Spina" - a Rose without a Thorn - around the edge. On the "tails" side (Scotland already assuming its lowly place in the scheme of things) was the thistle.

Four hundred years on the propaganda's the same. I fully endorse Kenny MacLaren's suggestion of donating these GBP2 Treaty of Union coins to the SNP. In fact, all the proindependence parties should urge their supporters to do likewise. Such a project would combine economic pragmatism and promotional opportunities with a frisson of exquisite irony.
