GRAIN prices remain under pressure but it appears that the reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy are making farmers consider their options for the current cropping year.
The European agency Strategie Grains is predicting a lower production throughout the European Union-25 for 2005/06. The forecast is total grain production will fall by 14 million tonnes to 270 million tonnes. Output of wheat is anticipated to decline by 3.2 million tonnes to 121.2 million tonnes, with barley falling by 3.1 million tonnes to 57.8 million tonnes.
