Summary
ITmight seem ironic in the current gales and storms, but the warmerwinterweather of recent years has put paid to one of curling's greatest traditions, the annual outdoor Grand Match between rinks representing the North and the South of Scotland, writes Mike Haggerty.
The first Grand Match took place in 1847 and the last was staged on the Lake of Menteith in 1979. While there have been a number of close calls since then, the annual planning for the event carried out since then by the Royal Caledonian Curling Club has been in vain. Now, bowing to the inevitable, the Royal Club are staging an indoor Grand Match today, involving 2500 curlers in 24 ice rinks up and down the country.See the full content of this document
