The greatest obstacle to happiness is the expectation of too great a happiness. It sounded a bit more elegant in French when it was first uttered in 1724 by the mathematician Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle but I'm sure you get his drift. A classic pocket cartoon on the morrow of Barack Obama's election to the American presidency made a similar point. A notice beside a small duck pond on the White House lawn read: "Please do not walk on the water."
